Three Deep Breaths

Immediate stress relief; plus, a trip to Savannah

“Find the good and praise it.”

—Alex Haley

Hello again! I hope you’ve been enjoying Spring so far!

April was a much busier month than I expected, and I wasn’t able to get an issue of Positive Vibes out last month, so I thought I’d better get this May issue out before Memorial Day!

In case you missed Ep. 23 of my podcast (episode title: “Three Deep Breaths”), I wanted to offer a quick written summary here: I’ve heard from a number of Positive Vibes subscribers this year who are feeling stressed or less than positive these days, and I get it! That episode is dedicated to you, and in it I describe a couple of deep breathing techniques—and why they actually work, from a health and physiological perspective.

Those techniques won’t solve all your problems, but they can provide you with some immediate stress relief, especially in frustrating or overwhelming situations. I hope you’ll have a listen to the episode to hear all the details (and the episode takes you through a guided practice of each technique), but here are the basics:

  1. Place your tongue at the roof of your mouth. It’s impossible to clench your jaw when you do so.

  2. Take 3 deep breaths in and out through your nose (that’s the first technique I describe). Deep inhale, all the way down to your belly. Slow exhale.

  3. Just focus on your breath, on your breathing, for those 3 moments. It’s that simple.

Here’s that podcast episode again (and you can find it on any podcast platform, like Apple or Spotify):

Thank you again for being part of the Positive Vibes community!

Best wishes for a safe and happy Memorial Day holiday,

Yasmine

What I’m Feeling Good About

Were you able to guess where I went for a visit/research trip in February (mentioned in the St. Patrick’s Day edition of Positive Vibes)? See that issue for all the pics and a link to the video hint. Only a couple of Positive Vibes members guessed correctly!

And the answer is . . . Savannah, GA.

In front of the famed Forsyth Park fountain

It’s one of my favorite US cities, truly full of positive vibes, and steeped in history. In fact, most people don’t know that, historically, as much as a third of Savannah's population claimed Irish roots! And most of them are from just 4 counties in Ireland! Hence, this photo at Wexford, Savannah’s Irish Pub (named after the most represented county of Irish heritage in Savannah):

Notably, most of the interior was actually crafted and shipped over from Ireland and assembled in Savannah. Plus, I love that there are portraits of some of Savannah’s more famous Irish citizens all around the restaurant:

This is also why I mentioned it (and the city’s famous St. Patrick’s Day parade) in the St. Patrick’s Day issue of Positive Vibes.

Don’t be surprised to find a Savannah reference or setting in future novels of mine! 😉

And here’s a photo from the gorgeous Tybee Island Light Station and Museum—worth a visit if you’re a history buff and ever in the Savannah area:

And who could miss Bonaventure Cemetery? Ever seen the Clint Eastwood-directed film, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, based on the book by John Berendt?

The Mercer-Williams house can now be toured! (This is the house featured in the movie, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.)

I had a wonderful conversation with a Positive Vibes member, Larry Zetterlind, for this recent episode:
